My name is Muhammad Idzham Fahmy. By profession, I fly the Airbus A330 as a First Officer with Malaysia Airlines. Off the flight deck, I am a husband, a street and wedding photographer, and, above all, the proud father of two beautiful children with special needs.
To many, aviation and photography might seem like two completely separate worlds—one defined by rigid checklists and technical discipline, the other by intuition and emotion. But for me, they balance each other in ways I never anticipated. While flying takes me across continents at 35,000 feet, photography brings me back down to Earth, forcing me to slow down and notice the profound beauty in everyday human life.
How it All Began: Searching for Peace, Not a Profession
I didn’t pick up a camera with the ambition of becoming a professional photographer, nor was I chasing a glamorous creative career. I bought my very first camera—a modest Fujifilm X-T10—during one of the most emotionally overwhelming periods of my life.
Navigating the reality of raising two special needs children left me carrying heavy questions and emotions I struggled to process. I found myself frequently asking, “Why is this happening to me?” The weight of overthinking was exhausting, and I desperately needed an outlet to quiet my mind.
What started as a simple desire to step out of the house and walk the streets of Kuala Lumpur slowly transformed into something far deeper. Carrying a camera became my form of therapy and active meditation. Instead of being trapped in my own thoughts, I was forced to look outward. I stopped overthinking and started observing.

What the Streets Taught Me About Humanity
The streets quickly became my greatest teacher. As I walked through bustling city alleys and quiet neighborhoods, I began observing the faces around me. I saw street vendors setting up before dawn, elderly couples holding hands, and workers carrying burdens I could barely imagine. Yet, so many of them still found reasons to smile, laugh, and keep moving forward.
That realization radically shifted my perspective. It made me understand that while life had thrown unexpected challenges my way, almost everyone around me was quietly fighting their own unseen battles with incredible resilience and dignity.
Photography taught me acceptance. It helped me replace “Why me?” with genuine gratitude for the present moment. It showed me how to find beauty in imperfection and hope in the middle of ordinary days.

From the Streets to Wedding Photography: Storytelling and Authentic Connection
As my passion for documenting life grew, so did my desire to tell deeper stories. That love for authentic human connection naturally drew me into wedding and portrait photography.
While street photography and weddings might appear vastly different on the surface, at their core, they are both about capturing genuine human emotion. On the streets, I observe life silently as an outsider. At weddings, I am invited into one of the most intimate, joyous chapters of a family’s life.
My goal in both spaces remains identical: authenticity over perfection.
I don’t believe in overly staged poses or forcing moments that aren’t there. The photographs that stand the test of time aren’t always the loud or technically flawless ones—they are the quiet glances between a bride and groom, the unscripted laughter of a guest, or a fleeting shadow across a crowded pavement.
To capture these fast-moving, high-stakes environments, my gear has evolved alongside my craft:
- Camera Bodies: While I built my foundation on Fujifilm (X-T10 and X-T3), my professional work relies on the robust autofocus and low-light capabilities of the Sony A7 III and Sony A7 IV.
- Favorite Lenses: My absolute go-to is the Sony FE 50mm f/1.4 GM. It naturally mirrors the human eye—wide enough to include environmental context, yet intimate enough to focus on emotional connection. For portraits and wedding ceremonies, the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM offers unmatched depth and subject isolation.

Balancing the Skies and the Streets
As an Airbus A330 First Officer, precision, safety, and strict protocols govern my working hours. Flying across time zones exposes me to vibrant cultures and diverse cities around the globe, giving me a unique vantage point on the world.
When I step off the aircraft, photography provides the counterweight I need. It allows me to step away from strict procedure and embrace spontaneity. Flying teaches me how vast the world is; photography reminds me of how intimate and interconnected human lives truly are.
What I Hope You Feel When Looking at My Images
If there is one thing I hope people experience when viewing my work, it is simply a reason to slow down.
In a fast-paced digital world where we endlessly scroll through thousands of fleeting images, I want my photographs to make you pause. I want them to evoke a sense of warmth, nostalgia, empathy, or quiet reflection.
Memories inevitably fade as years pass, but an authentic photograph holds the power to bring an emotion back instantly. Whether documenting a quiet moment on the streets of Malaysia or capturing the quiet promise between a couple on their wedding day, I photograph life with the deep belief that every person has a story worth telling.

If you are just beginning your own journey into photography, my advice is simple: don’t shoot to impress others—shoot to understand yourself and the world around you.
Do not get lost in gear debates, social media algorithms, or chasing perfection. Focus on curiosity. Learn to listen, observe, and feel. The most meaningful photographs are rarely the most polished; they are the ones that remind us what it felt like to be fully present in a single, unrepeatable moment.
